Redo Fics: Time Traveler!Harry

sunrunner Humorous, serious, angst-ridden, what-have-you, these are the fics I liked, where Harry goes back in time & ends up trying to change how things turned out, and hopefully avoid the second war or, depending on how far back he goes, both of Voldemort's uprisings altogether.
Note: As the majority of these occur back at the beginning of First Year, anyone who seriously believes there should be 'ships already assigned can go hang. Eleven & twelve year olds aren't "destined" to be with anyone but their friends, and these fics recognise that. Mentions, of course, of 'ships from the timeline Harry has left behind are inevitable, as everyone was old enough to have had at least one boy/girl friend by then, but as Harry is changing things, don't count on anything being carved in stone. If you adhere that stringently canon, what the hell are you doing reading fanfic in the first place, let alone ones of the Time Travel variety where situations are guaranteed to be different? Really, if you want a good gen/friendship read, these fics deliver that both happily & brilliantly.
Another Note: Either Harry goes back in time physically - meaning his whole self, body & all as he is at the time of his departure from his original timeline, - or only his mind/memories/soul from the future end up in his younger self's body. Of course, alternate timelines beg the question of whether he's moved into an entirely alternate dimension altogether, but that's a bit too technical for me when all I want is a good story, so we'll all just agree to gloss over that bit, 'mmmkay?

Summary: In the station between Life and Death Harry makes a different choice. Now he's eleven again, no one is turning out the same way, the Sorting Hat won't Sort him, the Malfoys are looking at him strangely, and - it's time for another visit.
Status: INCOMPLETE to Chapter 31. Not updated for more than a year :(
Impression: This fic was my absolute favorite in the genre until Dragongirl16's came along, and it might still be had it been completed. Even if serial WiP's make me froth at the mouth when it's a fic I especially like, I'm glad I read this one, even if it's been a while & I'm not too clear on the details. I think it stuck with me so much because Harry is very active in changing things right from the start, and I love how he goes about it. I've gotta re-read it for better clarification of just why I like it so much, but for now it's enough to know that I do.
Oh God Not Again! by Sarah1281
Summary: So maybe everything didn't work out perfectly for Harry. Still, most of his friends survived, he'd gotten married, and was about to become a father. If only he'd have stayed away from the Veil, he wouldn't have had to go back and do everything AGAIN.
Status: COMPLETE
Impression: High Order Crack! This fic does not take take itself seriously. At all. And neither should you. Total silliness & making fun of several stereotypes & clichés, as well as the best use of Lockhart ever seen in a fic, anywhere. This? Would make a terrific "Take A Shot/Swig Every Time Something Happens/Someone Does Something" Drinking Game.
Not that I'm encouraging the imbibing of alcoholic beverages! I meant root beer! Or Slush Puppies! I tell ya, that fizziness in the nose or the brain freeze headache are both killer, dude! ;D
Rewriting History by Tiro
Summary: Whenever Harry does something drastic, he always ends up in a strange situation. Time-travel-fic.
Status: INCOMPLETE to Chapter 23. Updates infrequent.
Impression: I cannot pinpoint why I like this one. I didn't, at first. Then I read a bit further & got drawn in. Go figure. Now I really like quite a few of the concepts & relationships to be found here, and, as reading fanfic has enhanced to exceptional heights my ability to suspend disbelief in the face of things authors ask of their readers to just go with, I find myself glad whenever I see an update. As this fic features a Harry who is 17 (at the start - this fic covers about 15 years so far), fresh from the second war, and looking to finish his last year of school, there are actually relationships in this one, canon & otherwise, but NOT Harry/anyone. All his relationships are strictly platonic up to the most recent chapter, but he's got an Epic Bromance (that might end up slashy) going on with - well, I wouldn't want to spoil it, would I? Oh, and Harry takes on a different name, one of the reasons I found it difficult to get into this fic. Harry is Harry is Harry - except when he's not. XP If you can get past that and aren't a homophobic git, you might enjoy this one.

Summary: 20 years after Harry defeated Voldemort, a new Dark Lord rose in the Europe. When all is lost, and his family being killed before his very eyes, to what lengths would Harry go to change the future? Time Travel AU.

Summary: Sequel to the Road Not Taken. Time Travel AU fix it. After the events in The Road Not Taken, Harry's choices are set to change the future. Only now the question is, can he change it enough to save the people he loves?
Status: INCOMPLETE to Chapter 5. Regularly updated, ATM.

Impression: Probably my favorite of the genre so far, but I'm a long-time fan of Faith, so I reckon I'm predisposed to go effusive over pretty much anything from Dragongirl16. Nevertheless, it isn't much of a spoiler to impart that I love the use of Ollivander, & the restrictions this puts on Harry, as all that happens in the first few chapters. It's got enough new events to keep my interest high, & a future situation that is frankly terrifying & is frequently told in flashbacks (a nifty device that works well in this fic), while maintaining connection to the original canon timeline without beating me over the head with yet another fic that might as well just be a re-read of the Philosopher's Stone. As with most of this genre, the first series is a lot of set-up & groundwork, but Harry comes to a heartbreaking realisation within the first five chapters of the second series that makes me ache for him. Of course, being Harry, he doesn't let it stop him.

Impression: Another one it's been a while since I read, so I haven't got much. Lessee, it's definitely on the funny side, so don't go into it expecting anything serious - and I think Draco has a significant role? But he & Harry aren't all buddy-buddy - more like reluctant confederates. Yeah, that's it until I give it another read.
To Recollect the Future by oliver.snape
Summary: Hindsight is 20/20, but when Harry's last steps into the forest set him back further than he'd ever thought, he never realised how grateful he'd be to have Snape there to help too. Mentor/guardian fic, time travel, but not cliched.

Impression: There's a lot of Harry & Snape interaction, as they work together quite closely, & a couple of clever little twists at the end, but I can't recall much more than that right now. Need to give it a re-read.
What is Right: Year One by Emma Lipardi
Summary: Harry finds himself making a decision to give it all up just to change what has happened. What he doesn't realize is that he gets a second chance to set it right.

Summary: SEQUEL TO "WHAT IS RIGHT"! The summer before Harry's second year brings a lot of changes. His knowledge of the future is not always helpful. Strange things are happening, and he doesn't know what to do.
Status: INCOMPLETE to Chapter 6. Not been updated in some time.
Impression: One of the first HP Time Travel fics I ever read, & I'm only sorry it hasn't been updated recently. A lot of the first series is groundwork & foreshadowing for things that have yet to manifest, and I will always be interested enough to come back and read another update, as Emma Lipardi's other huge project fic, the better known An Aunt's Love, is plenty indicative of how amazing What Is Right is shaping up to be. Features Ravenclaw!Harry, one of the only ones I've read with him in that House that I can actually get behind the logic of. (Didya see what I did there? Logic. Ravenclaw. Geddit? :P) Not to mention, I'm fond of almost any fic where the prominent roles of Harry's supporters are played by Snape & the Malfoys (yep, all three of them). And there's quite the fascinating use of pretty much every magical creature Harry comes in contact with, including - wait for it - one Remus Lupin, werewolf. For a chronic WiP, this is so worth the read.
